Floor Maintenance & Care Guide
Proper maintenance after installing or refinishing your floors ensures they stay beautiful and durable for years. Below are recommended guidelines for curing, furniture placement, and cleaning.
Curing Times for Polyurethane Finishes
- Water-Based Polyurethane: Light traffic in socks can walk on the floor after 2–4 hours. Normal traffic may begin after approximately 36 hours.
- Oil-Based Polyurethane: Light traffic in socks may be allowed after 12–18 hours. Normal traffic can commence after 3 days. Full curing may take up to 7 days depending on temperature and humidity.
Furniture Placement & Rugs
- Do not place furniture on freshly finished floors for at least 3 days (water-based) or 5 days (oil-based).
- Use felt padding under chairs, tables, sofas, and other furniture. Avoid rubber or plastic pads which may mark the floor.
- Wait at least 7 days before placing area rugs on newly finished floors to prevent adhesion or discoloration.
- Never apply tape (painter’s tape, colored tape, or adhesive tape) directly to fresh finishes; it can strip or damage the floor.
Cleaning Your Floors
- Avoid cleaning products that contain waxes, oils, or polishes, such as Murphy’s Oil, Pledge, or Mop & Glo. These can damage the finish and void maintenance warranties.
- Use only manufacturer-recommended floor cleaners suitable for your specific flooring type.
- For unknown finishes, consult a trained flooring specialist to select a safe cleaning product to preserve the appearance and longevity of your floor.
General Maintenance Tips
- Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly using a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum designed for hard floors.
- Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining or moisture damage.
- Maintain a stable indoor humidity (35–55%) to minimize wood expansion and contraction, especially for hardwood floors.
- Use protective mats at entrances to reduce dirt, sand, and grit from being tracked onto your floor.
- Lift heavy furniture when moving it instead of dragging to avoid scratches or indentations.
Following these guidelines will help your floors remain in pristine condition, maintain their finish, and extend their lifespan. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific flooring type, as curing times and maintenance requirements may vary.
